INNOVATION THROUGH AUTOMATION

Seam Welding

About Seam Welding Automation

Seam welding is a welding technique that bonds two metals together by making a series of overlapping spot welds that are created from two rotating roller electrodes. This form of welding creates a strong enough bond in the workpiece that makes it fluid and gas tight.

Automating this process with robotics can be easily accomplished via a custom-designed robot seam welding end-effector or a purpose-built seam welding machine that is tended by a robot. Robotically automating seam welding can drastically improve the quality and consistency of the welding bond.

Advantages of Seam Welding

There are a number of advantages to automating seam welding:

  • The welding process can be easily automated with robotics
  • Seam welding creates a clean, clearly defined weld
  • Gases and thus fumes are not emitted during the welding process, making it a cleaner and safer process
  • Seam welds can form liquid-tight and gas-tight joints making them ideal for storage vessels
  • Seam welding can be used in conjunction with stainless steel, nickel alloy metals and magnesium alloy metals.

Applications of Seam Welding

Seam welding has a number of applications spanning several industries:

  • Construction of all forms of metal barrels
  • Fluid and gas tight storage vessels and piping
  • Exhaust systems for automotive, industrial, aerospace, etc.
