MWES partnered with a global medical equipment manufacturer to rapidly design and deliver automated calibration stations for ventilator valve assemblies during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Working alongside GE Healthcare’s production ramp-up efforts, MWES provided a solution that enabled fast, precise testing of life-critical components—helping accelerate ventilator output when the world needed it most.

The Challenge

Rapid, High-Volume Ventilator Production Under Global Shortages

When ventilator demand skyrocketed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturers faced the dual challenge of speed and precision. Each ventilator’s valve components required exact calibration to meet stringent medical standards. The production system needed to:

  • Achieve consistent, medical-grade calibration results at high speed
  • Seamlessly integrate with customer-provided software and diagnostic tools
  • Provide operators with a safe, simple interface to minimize training time and error rates
  • Fit within an accelerated build and deployment schedule to meet urgent demand

MWES was tasked with creating a scalable, operator-friendly solution capable of integrating into an already fast-moving assembly environment—without compromising accuracy or safety.

The Solution

Six Integrated Calibration Stations for In-Line Valve Testing

MWES engineered and deployed six identical ventilator valve calibration stations, each featuring:

  • Rack-mounted control cabinets housing pneumatic and electrical systems for precise valve actuation
  • PC and monitor integration running customer-supplied diagnostic software
  • Custom-designed calibration fixtures to securely position valves for repeatable testing
  • Ergonomic workbench surfaces and clearly arranged operator interfaces for efficient workflow
  • Compact, modular design to minimize footprint and allow seamless line integration

This setup enabled high-speed, in-line testing of valves, allowing operators to run accurate calibrations quickly and safely—even under intense production pressures.
